Beasts and Battles

  • Ukaria Cultural Center 119 Williams Rd Mt Baker Summit, Adelaide (map)

Adelaide Baroque Orchestra Presents
Beast and Battles
Conducted by Ben Dollman
With special guests Max Riebl (countertenor) and Guy Fishman (cello)

Vivid depictions of war in Biber’s 1673 Battalia, Telemann’s portrayal of Don Quixote attacking the windmills; the conflicts in Purcell’s King Arthur, Handel’s Orlando, and Matthew Locke’s The Tempest and Corette’s portrayal of Native American War dances. The Beasts (real or imagined) give this seventeenth century program another dimension and depth: Biber’s unseen enemy, the monster that Orlando begs to battle, the Cold Genius from King Arthur, and Don Quixote’s ‘thirty or forty hulking giants’. Fiery, vibrant, passionate and unpredictable music from turbulent times and the genius of Handel, Telemann, Purcell, Locke, Corrette and Biber.
